SMG Case Study

Client:
  Wireless Infrastructure Equipment Company

Problem Description:

The client is an Israeli start-up that has developed two technologies designed to improve the performance and efficiency of linear power amplifiers (LPAs).  These linear power amplifiers boost cellular signals for mobile phone use.

The client had two questions:

  1. Whether to license out their LPA technology or to use that technology to manufacturer their own LPAs?

  2. If they decide to license their technology, what companies should they target to purchase the technology?  If they decide to build their own LPAs, what generation of LPA (2G, 2.5G, 3G) should they build?

Project Development:

First, research was done to gain an understanding of LPAs and how they fit in the overall wireless infrastructure market.  Second, the size of the LPA market was determined and the companies involved in the LPA market were listed and profiled.  Third, an examination was made to determine if LPA technologies comparable to those developed by our Israeli client existed in the market place.

Finding that there were a large number of small LPA manufacturers with similar technologies and that only a few companies dominated the LPA marketplace, it was deemed best to license out the LPA technology, rather than independently manufacturer LPAs.

Final Report Recommendations:

The first recommendation was to determine if the technology was indeed superior to existing LPA technology.  If the technology proved superior, the client was advised to license out the technology rather than manufacture their own line of LPAs.

The most appropriate licensee companies were deemed to be seven major wireless infrastructure companies and the top two linear power amplifier manufacturers.  These companies were seen as the only ones large enough to support a license agreement.

Impact:

The management of the Israeli start-up accepted the SMG recommendation to approach the potential licensee companies.  SMG contacted the seven major wireless infrastructure companies and the top two linear power amplifier manufacturers to schedule appointments on behalf of the Israeli start-up client.
